As a teenager, while I was helping my grandparents make arrangements after the death of my father, I was shot at, beaten, and arrested by a group of white police officers in a case of mistaken identity.



I took them to court, but they ended up without more than a slap on the wrist. Experiencing racial profiling like this changed everything for me. Following my grandfather's advice, I joined law enforcement to change the system from the inside and then went on to become a civil rights attorney.
