March is Brain Injury Awareness Month
In observance of Brain Injury Awareness Month this March, we acknowledge the profound impact of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) on individuals and communities. The Traumatic Brain Injury Strategic Partnership Advisory Council of Washington State (TBI Council), established under RCW 74.31, is at the forefront of advocacy and support. Comprising 25 members from various sectors, including public and private entities, individuals affected by TBI, medical professionals, caregivers, tribal nations, and state agencies, the TBI Council embodies a collaborative effort to address the multifaceted challenges posed by TBIs.
*Mission and Objectives*
The TBI Council collaborates closely with the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) and other state agencies to fulfill its mission, which includes:
* Spreading awareness and education about TBI and its prevention.
* Identifying needs and gaps in TBI services, resources, and projects.
* Creating partnerships and coordination across public and private sectors.

Recognizing that TBI can affect anyone, the TBI Council and DSHS offer a range of support, information, and referral services, including:
* *Information and Referral (I&R):*?Through the partnership with WA211, individuals experiencing TBI-related needs can access trained resource specialists for relevant referrals to community-based resources.
* *Public Awareness Campaigns:*?Education, outreach, and events are pivotal in preventing and treating TBIs by disseminating vital information to the community.
* *Support Group Resources:*?Virtual support groups provide opportunities for connection, education, and problem-solving skills development, catering to diverse populations nationwide.
* *TBI Resources and Workbook:*?A comprehensive workbook [ [link removed] ] is valuable for individuals navigating TBI recovery and rehabilitation.

*Achievements and Milestones*
Over the past year, the collaborative efforts of the TBI Council, DSHS, partner agencies, and the community have resulted in significant achievements, including:
* Over 24,000 individuals with TBI connected with resources through WA211.
* 32,000+ participants engaged in SafeKids events.
* 700+ participants benefited from TBI Behavioral Health ECHO with the University of Washington.
* 225+ TBI Virtual Support Groups tailored to diverse needs.
* Implementation of the Department of Corrections (DOC) TBI Pilot-to-Program supporting 700+ incarcerated individuals.

As we navigate through March, let us collectively raise awareness about TBIs professionally and within our communities. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by brain injuries.
