I am thrilled to have the honor of announcing our first 2024 New American Hero [[link removed]] , Michigan State Senator and Assistant Majority Leader Darrin Camilleri!

Michigan State Senator Darrin Camilleri is our first 2024 New American Hero Honoree! [[link removed]]

The son of an immigrant father from Malta and a Latina mother, Darrin grew up in a working-class, union family in Michigan, becoming the first person in his family to graduate from college. Since graduation, he has devoted his life to public service, first as a teacher and then as a public servant. He was elected to the Michigan State House of Representatives in 2016 and became the first ever Maltese American legislator and Michigan’s youngest Latino ever elected. Now, as the Assistant Majority Leader in the Senate, he is continuing to break down barriers for working-class families by leading the first successful effort to repeal right to work legislation, expanding college access, supporting public education, and advocating for immigrant communities.
