Hi John,

I am thrilled to have the honor of announcing our first 2024 New American Hero, Michigan State Senator and Assistant Majority Leader Darrin Camilleri!

The son of an immigrant father from Malta and a Latina mother, Darrin grew up in a working-class, union family in Michigan, becoming the first person in his family to graduate from college. Since graduation, he has devoted his life to public service, first as a teacher and then as a public servant. He was elected to the Michigan State House of Representatives in 2016 and became the first ever Maltese American legislator and Michigan’s youngest Latino ever elected. Now, as the Assistant Majority Leader in the Senate, he is continuing to break down barriers for working-class families by leading the first successful effort to repeal right to work legislation, expanding college access, supporting public education, and advocating for immigrant communities. 

Please join me in congratulating Darrin for his accomplishments and honoring him as a New American Hero on June 27th in Washington, DC! 

As a legislator, NAL trainer, and community advocate, Darrin has supported so many of us in our movement to create a stronger, more inclusive democracy. We are excited to honor him as our first 2024 New American Hero and hope to see you this summer as we celebrate him and his inspiring leadership!
