Friend --

This is obviously a very difficult time for the world, and for political organizing. Just as all of us have been quickly adjusting to the new normal of daily life under social distancing given the current COVID-19 virus public health emergency, we will now be holding meetings online <[link removed]>.

HEALTHY LA ACTION ALERT:
Call Your LA County Supervisor TODAY

If you’ve been keeping up with Healthy LA <[link removed]>, you may already know that LA City Council held an emergency meeting on Friday to discuss COVID-19 relief measures. After almost 11 hours of debate, our coalition walked away with a couple of big wins and a few dismaying losses.

TOMORROW, Tuesday, March 31, the LA County Board of Supervisors will meet to discuss COVID-19 relief efforts of their own. The County includes 10 million residents (not just LA City, but 87 other cities). The five Supervisors each have a huge amount of power and they need to hear from you!

Please contact your County Supervisor TODAY and urge them to support the Healthy LA platform to protect workers, renters, and Angelenos who are undocumented or unhoused. <[link removed]>

The Executive Order issued by the Chair of the County Board of Supervisors on March 20th <[link removed]> is a first step, but much more is needed to ensure the protection of all LA County residents. This must include bold, immediate, and ambitious measures that set a progressive model for local leaders of the 88 cities within LA County to follow.

You can also submit official public comments by email to [email protected]. It must be submitted by 5 PM today, Monday, March 30th. The Agenda Item and Meeting Date must be included in the subject line. Your email will become part of the official public record.

NIGHT SCHOOL: THE NATURE OF THE TWO-PARTY SYSTEM

Thursday, April 02, 2020 at 7pm to 9pm

Though Bernie Sanders won his Senate seat as an Independent, he’s vying for the Democratic Party nomination for President. This session interrogates why United States politics is dominated by a two-party system, and how exactly this system functions. Within this framework, we discuss the relationship between organized labor and the Democratic Party, why the Democratic Party is not a Labor Party, and what a truly mass Labor Party would look like. Comrades are encouraged (but not required) to review recommended readings linked below:

- The Crises of Labor and the Left in the United States <[link removed]>, by Mark Dudzic & Adolf Reed (Socialist Register,  2015)
- A Left Strategy for 2020 and Beyond <[link removed]>,Carl Davidson & Bill Fletcher Jr, (TRUTHOUT, 2019)

Find more information on this Night School series on socialism and electoral politics (as well as past and future installments) here <[link removed]>.
