Here are some updates.
* In his State of the Union address, President Joe Biden called ([link removed]) on Congress to pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
+ Senate Democrats recently reintroduced ([link removed]) the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, breathing new life into the bill by introducing a new formula for determining which states are subject to preclearance.
* South Carolina Republicans asked ([link removed]) a federal court to hold the 2024 election under its current congressional map, which was found to be racially gerrymandered, citing a delay in the Supreme Court’s final decision on the constitutionality of the map.
* A district court in Washington state held ([link removed]) a hearing to review a remedial legislative map that was proposed by pro-voting groups in the state. The current map was struck down for diluting Latino voting power and violating the Voting Rights Act.
