Daily Docket — Friday, March 8

Here are some updates.

  • In his State of the Union address, President Joe Biden called on Congress to pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.

    • Senate Democrats recently reintroduced the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, breathing new life into the bill by introducing a new formula for determining which states are subject to preclearance.

  • South Carolina Republicans asked a federal court to hold the 2024 election under its current congressional map, which was found to be racially gerrymandered, citing a delay in the Supreme Court’s final decision on the constitutionality of the map.

  • A district court in Washington state held a hearing to review a remedial legislative map that was proposed by pro-voting groups in the state. The current map was struck down for diluting Latino voting power and violating the Voting Rights Act.

A new episode of our podcast Defending Democracy is here! So far this year, Republicans have filed nearly a dozen anti-voting lawsuits. Five of those lawsuits are in Arizona alone. In our latest podcast episode, Marc and Paige explain what exactly the GOP is after. Listen on Apple, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts, or watch it on YouTube.
