This was an important first step.
We are going to get through the coronavirus outbreak together. If you are experiencing symptoms or are looking for more information, you can visit the website of the CDC or the Illinois Department of Health. We are closely monitoring the situation and its effects on the people of Illinois and our nation as we work together to keep our families and communities safe.
John, we took an important step in response to the coronavirus crisis.
The House of Representatives passed a two trillion dollar relief package, providing assistance to workers, small businesses, and industries hit by the crisis.
Let me be clear: this bill does not include everything it should have, but it takes important steps to protect workers, bolster our healthcare system, and stabilize our economy.
The work must continue - this is not over, and Congress must be there every step of the way to get working families through this. This crisis made it even more obvious that the system sets up working people and families to fail.
During the course of these past two weeks, I heard your concerns loud and clear and tried to implement them in the final version of the bill. Here’s what I’ve done:
- I led over 52 of my colleagues in fighting to keep our transportation systems going strong to support Chicago’s public transit agencies like Pace, CTA, Metra, and the RTA.
- I introduced the Rental Eviction Moratorium Act to put a freeze on evictions and foreclosures.
- I authored a letter urging the House and Senate to put stringent restrictions on any airline bailout including limits to stock buybacks, CEO executive pay increases, and assurances that contract workers would keep their jobs.
- I fought for the stimulus to include direct-cash assistance in the form of grants to help small businesses.
- I authored a letter that 74 of my colleagues signed, urging credit reporting agencies not report adverse credit events during the crisis including missed rent, car or credit card payments. Unfortunately this was not included.
The GOP made it very clear that if they got their way, working families would be left to fend for themselves. This is why it’s critical that we keep the fight going strong to ensure everyday working-class people are protected.
¡Sí Se Puede!
