Sandhill cranes flying over the Platte River
Sandhill crane migration kicks into high gear

Migratory bird numbers have increased dramatically over the past couple of weeks in response to mild February temperatures. In fact, the Crane Trust reported record numbers of cranes in their first aerial surveys of the season.

Take advantage of the continuing warm weather by venturing out to your favorite crane viewing spot, including the hike-bike trail at Fort Kearny State Recreation Area, sooner rather than later this spring.?Peak numbers and departures are likely to occur earlier than usual this year, as long as the weather pattern remains in place.

Learn more about viewing cranes at Fort Kearny at the link below. Happy viewing!

A look at year two of the Berggren Pheasant Plan 2.0

With 2023 in the books, year two of the Berggren Pheasant Plan 2.0 has come to an end. In 2023, biologists were able to complete 140 contracts, affecting nearly 11,000 acres of habitat for pheasants and other upland game birds. Biologists also created plans and contracts with private landowners across the state for an additional 13,000 acres of habitat improvements.

The Berggren Pheasant Plan provides financial incentives and cost-share to landowners to enroll in habitat conservation programs. It also implements early successional habitat management for pheasants and other upland game birds.
