Statewide trout stocking schedule announced

Spring has come early, and Nebraskans are ready to fish. Additional opportunities are headed your way, as Nebraska Game and Parks is scheduling the release of rainbow trout in waters across the state this spring.

Things will kick off March 9, opening day of the Trout Lake at Two Rivers State Recreation Area in Douglas County; see the link below for regulations at this lake. Then trout will be stocked in other water bodies across the state.?

Game and Parks to consider 2024-2025 waterfowl recommendations

Nebraska Game and Parks will consider 2024-2025 waterfowl hunting season recommendations at its March 8 meeting in Hastings. The meeting begins at 8 a.m. at the Hastings Convention Center, 2205 Osborne Drive E. See the proposed dates and other meeting items at the link below.

Sandhill crane migration kicks into high gear

Migratory bird numbers have increased dramatically over the past couple of weeks in response to mild February temperatures. In fact, the Crane Trust reported record numbers of cranes in their first aerial surveys of the season.

Take advantage of the continuing warm weather by venturing out to your favorite crane viewing spot, including the hike-bike trail at Fort Kearny State Recreation Area, sooner rather than later this spring.?Peak numbers and departures are likely to occur earlier than usual this year, as long as the weather pattern remains in place.

A look at year two of the Berggren Pheasant Plan 2.0

With 2023 in the books, year two of the Berggren Pheasant Plan 2.0 has come to an end. In 2023, biologists were able to complete 140 contracts, affecting nearly 11,000 acres of habitat for pheasants and other upland game birds. Biologists also created plans and contracts with private landowners across the state for an additional 13,000 acres of habitat improvements.

The Berggren Pheasant Plan provides financial incentives and cost-share to landowners to enroll in habitat conservation programs. It also implements early successional habitat management for pheasants and other upland game birds.

Low water affecting Nebraska boaters this spring

If you're planning to go boating this spring, you should be cautious and patient when launching and boating, as water levels are low. Plan to bring a spotter with you or check to see if the end of the ramp is visible from the shoreline or dock before launching, if water clarity allows.
