Here’s a headline from this weekend that caught my eye:

A federal abortion ban could undo Michigan's constitutional measure. How realistic is that?
Here’s my rule of thumb when it comes to evaluating politicians: Look at their record, not what they say when they’re trying to get elected.

And when it comes to issues like abortion or IVF, Republican politicians know their positions are deeply unpopular, so they’re scrambling to distance themselves from their records.

That’s true in our race—all of the serious Republican candidates have a history of extremist positions on choice of any kind, and, if they win, they’d likely have the opportunity to vote on issues like abortion and IVF.

While the Michigan Senate primary isn’t until August (even though the presidential primary is today!), let’s review the bidding on where each of our Republican opponents stand on this issue:

Former Congressman Mike Rogers repeatedly voted for an abortion ban even in the cases of rape, incest, and miscarriage, and co-authored 4 bills that would have banned the destruction of frozen IVF embryos

Former Congressman Peter Meijer has campaigned on being “100% pro-life” even in cases of rape or incest, supported a federal ban on abortion, and co-sponsored a bill that would have prevented the disposal of frozen IVF embryos

Businessman Sandy Pensler says he is “a pro-life conservative”; called Roe v. Wade a “terrible decision,” and claimed that Prop 3 in Michigan, which protected the right to choose in Michigan’s Constitution, “went too far.”

So yes, if Republicans win control of the Senate, keep the House, and elect Donald Trump, a federal abortion ban that affects Michiganders is absolutely realistic.

The path to the White House and control of the Senate runs through Michigan. We know Michiganders are with us on these issues, so we’re working to hold our opponents accountable to their voting histories. Will you help us set the record straight?
