Sierra Club Files Lawsuit to Block Logging in Giant Sequoia National Monument

The Sierra Club just filed a lawsuit against the US Forest Service for unprecedented logging attempts in Giant Sequoia National Monument. The proposed projects would log tens of thousands of trees from over 13,000 acres of public forests under the guise of post-fire restoration. At stake is the well-being of an ancient and massive tree species: giant sequoias, the largest tree on Earth with a lifespan of over 3,000 years.

See what our lawsuit alleges and how we’re protecting the endangered species who call these trees home.

The New Soot Rule Will Save Lives and Money

"Simply put, if you work outdoors or have a child with asthma or an elderly family member with a cardiopulmonary disease, this new standard will make it easier to breathe." In his latest article, Ben Jealous, Executive Director of Sierra Club, shares why the new National Ambient Air Quality Standard for fine particulate matter, or soot, is a big deal in improving air quality for communities across the country.

Read more about how we defeated oil and gas lobbying to win this new regulation and protect public health.

Wildlife Crossings Can Mend a Landscape

The longest wildlife crossing in the world is in the Netherlands, where overpasses allow animals to roam large distances freely without the risk of becoming roadkill. Despite being one of the most densely populated countries in the world, the Netherlands has nearly 3,000 crossings in place that reduce habitat fragmentation and improve connectivity for wildlife like red foxes, roe deer, wild boar, otters, badgers, and more. Now the United States has the chance to follow suit with the new $350 million that was allocated for wildlife crossings via the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021.

Read more about what the Netherlands can teach us about wildlife crossings and reconnecting landscapes.

Wall Street is Using Your Savings to Fund the Climate Crisis

The world's largest asset managers, which manage retirement savings for corporate 401(k)s, foundations, public pension funds, and more, pour billions of dollars into fossil fuel companies every year. This money enables the construction of more dirty energy infrastructure like deepwater drilling and the Mountain Valley Pipeline that further heat up the planet, destroy ecosystems, and harm our health. But we can stop them.

Tell asset managers to stop funding climate chaos!

Protect Our Water and Reject Line 5!

The Great Lakes are home to 21 percent of the world’s fresh water. They supply drinking water for tens of millions of people. This is one of the most ecologically sensitive areas in the world, and it’s already seen 33 oil spills from the Line 5 pipeline that criss-crosses our critical waterways. Now the pipeline operator is asking the Army Corps of Engineers to approve a pipeline reroute that would extend the lifespan of this already old and dangerous pipeline, and further threaten the Great Lakes.

Act now to protect our water and reject Line 5!

Haven't You Always Wanted to Make Polluters Pay?

The Environmental Protection Agency is considering making corporations pay for methane pollution and has asked for as many public comments as possible before March 26! Methane is a short-lived climate pollutant that has more than 80 times the warming potential of carbon dioxide over a 20-year period. Reducing methane pollution from the oil and gas industry is the fastest, most cost-effective way to slow the rate of climate change and severe weather like wildfires and floods, but only if we act now.

Let’s make polluters pay: Add your comment by March 26!

Support Our Work

Bears, Wolves & Whales Urgently Need Your Help

Special interests are on the attack against some of our country's most beloved endangered species. The US Fish and Wildlife Service will soon announce whether it will strip grizzly bears of their endangered species protections. Congress is again cozying up with special interests to remove gray wolves from the endangered species list. And a planned oil export facility off the coast of Texas could be a death sentence for these gentle animals, exposing them to the deadly threats of ship strikes and oil spills.

You can make a difference with a gift right now to support our efforts to protect species under threat.
