Sierra Club Files Lawsuit to Block Logging in Giant Sequoia National Monument

The Sierra Club just filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Forest Service for proposing unprecedented logging in Giant Sequoia National Monument. The proposed projects would log tens of thousands of trees from over 13,000 acres of public forests under the guise of post-fire restoration. At stake is the well-being of an ancient and massive tree species: giant sequoias, the largest tree on Earth with a lifespan of over 3,000 years

The New Soot Rule Saves Lives and Money

Wildlife Crossings Can Mend a Landscape

The United States can learn a lot from the Netherlands, which has the longest wildlife crossing in the world to allow animals to roam freely without the risk of becoming roadkill. Despite being one of the most densely populated countries in the world, the Netherlands has nearly 3,000 crossings in place that reduce habitat fragmentation and improve connectivity for wildlife like red foxes, roe deer, wild boar, otters, badgers, and more. America’s landscapes could follow suit with $350 million allocated for wildlife crossings via the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021.

Bears, Wolves, and Whales Are In Urgent Danger

Special interests are on the attack against some of our country's most beloved endangered species. The US Fish and Wildlife Service will soon announce whether it will strip grizzly bears of their endangered species protections. Congress is again cozying up with special interests to remove gray wolves from the endangered species list. And a planned oil export facility off the coast of Texas could be a death sentence for whales, exposing these gentle animals to the deadly threats of ship strikes and oil spills.

Protect Our Water and Reject Line 5!

Did you know the Great Lakes are home to 21 percent of the world’s fresh water and supply drinking water for tens of millions of people? It is one of the most ecologically sensitive areas in the world, and we are working to shut down the Line 5 pipeline that criss-crosses through it and has caused 33 oil spills already. The Line 5 pipeline operator is asking the Army Corps of Engineers to approve a pipeline reroute that would extend the lifespan of this already old and dangerous pipeline, and further threaten the Great Lakes.

The EPA Is Ready to Make Polluters Pay

The Environmental Protection Agency is considering making corporations pay for methane pollution and is asking for as many public comments as possible before March 26! Methane is a short-lived climate pollutant that has more than 80 times the warming potential of carbon dioxide over a 20-year period. Reducing methane pollution from the oil and gas industry is the fastest, most cost-effective way to slow the rate of climate change and severe weather like wildfires and floods, but only if we act now.
