This week, Governor Glenn Youngkin and First Lady Suzanne S. Youngkin
Announced the Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission Honorary Leadership
Council. These distinguished leaders will lend their voices and experience to
elevate the Commonwealth's commemoration of the 250th anniversary of our
nation's founding. Governor Glenn Youngkin spoke at the announcement,
highlighting the historic occasion at a historic location – Saint John's
Episcopal Church in Richmond.

Youngkin spoke to the vision of our Founding Fathers articulated at St.
John’s, the immortal words of Patrick Henry, and the history of the American
Revolution rooted deeply in Virginia.

In commemoration of Black History Month, First Lady Suzanne S. Youngkin joined
with leading ladies from across the Commonwealth to tour the Elegy Exhibit at
the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA). Contemporary American artist Dawoud
Bey’s installation, “Elegy”, is a collection of photographs and videos that
poignantly capture both the journey and reality of the Virginia slave trail,
Louisiana plantations, and Ohio’s Underground Railroad. The installation
provided a curated and expressive space to contemplate the United States’
complex history while bringing together a sisterhood of Virginia women for an
afternoon of culture and art.

Following the tour, Mrs. Youngkin enjoyed tea with the women in the Floris Tea
Room. “The VMFA is a treasure of the Commonwealth in that it belongs to the
people,” said First Lady Suzanne S. Youngkin. “It is through the empathetic and
extraordinary lens of art that the most evocative stories are told, and the
imagination is ignited.”

Retired United States Army Officer, four-star General, and the first African
American in #homehistory to serve as the U.S. Secretary of State and Chairman
of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Colin L. Powell’s story is a testament to
unrelenting service, bravery and excellence. Colin L. Powell, a resident of
Virginia, passed away in October 2021 and was laid to rest in Arlington
National Cemetery alongside hundreds of thousands of our nation’s heroes. On
loan to the Executive Mansion by the Powell family, these photographs serve as
a reminder of his legacy as a remarkable Virginian and are available to view in
the Old Governor’s Office as part of the current ‘Art Experience’. Representing
the Commonwealth's strong military history, students from Fork Union Military
Academy joined the Governor, First Lady and guests at the Executive Mansion
this week for the kickoff event highlighting the Virginia American Revolution
250 Commission (VA 250).
