In commemoration of Black History Month, First Lady Suzanne S. Youngkin joined with leading ladies from across the Commonwealth to tour the Elegy Exhibit at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA). Contemporary American artist Dawoud Bey’s installation, “Elegy”, is a collection of photographs and videos that poignantly capture both the journey and reality of the Virginia slave trail, Louisiana plantations, and Ohio’s Underground Railroad. The installation provided a curated and expressive space to contemplate the United States’ complex history while bringing together a sisterhood of Virginia women for an afternoon of culture and art. Following the tour, Mrs. Youngkin enjoyed tea with the women in the Floris Tea Room. “The VMFA is a treasure of the Commonwealth in that it belongs to the people,” said First Lady Suzanne S. Youngkin. “It is through the empathetic and extraordinary lens of art that the most evocative stories are told, and the imagination is ignited.” |
