Canada
======


 


One misconception about wildfire is that they only happen in the winter. In Canada, so-called zombie-fires will burn all winter long, hidden under the cover of frost. The peat moss in British Columbia’s soil fans the flames, which are insulated from the freezing temperatures by layers of snow. 

 

**Typically, Canada sees 5 or 6 fires burning through the winter.** However, this January saw the unprecedented peak of 106 active zombie fires, which usually will go out sometime in the spring – but an unprecedented 91 fires are still burning now. This trend of longer winter fires is linked to more extreme wildfires during the hot season, and an earlier start to the fires. 


Russia

Last Friday we witnessed **the death of Navalny**, the leader of Putin’s opposition who remained stashed away in a remote prison near the Arctic Circle. Navalny was a key figure in the resistance to Putin’s despotic regime, and **many have assumed that Navalny’s death is the direct result of Putin’s paranoid tyranny**. He had been poisoned by nerve agent in 2020, and Putin had effectively incapacitated the resistance hero since that time in a series of prisons. 


Palestine

1.5 Million Palestinians remain sheltering in Gaza, over half of the Gazan population. Despite I**srael’s continued insistence that there can be no two-state solution, there seems to be no tenable alternate**. It is clear that Netanyahu and his right-wing coalition hope to shepherd the Gazans south into Egypt and essentially expunge them from Israel and Israeli-controlled territory. However, this intent breaks international law and goes against most Western morals – we believe people should not be discriminated against for their culture or religion.
