One misconception about wildfire is that they only happen in the winter. In Canada, so-called zombie-fires will burn all winter long, hidden under the cover of frost. The peat moss in British Columbia’s soil fans the flames, which are insulated from the freezing temperatures by layers of snow. Typically, Canada sees 5 or 6 fires burning through the winter. However, this January saw the unprecedented peak of 106 active zombie fires, which usually will go out sometime in the spring – but an unprecedented 91 fires are still burning now. This trend of longer winter fires is linked to more extreme wildfires during the hot season, and an earlier start to the fires. |
