Team — Completing the Census is vital, now more than ever, as COVID-19 has caused the bureau to halt field operations until the beginning of April.

As your elected leader in Congress, it's my responsibility to take actionable steps to ensure the health and future of our democracy are not in jeopardy. That is why I led members of the New York delegation in a letter asking Secretary Commerce Wilbur Ross to extend the data-gathering period to September for the 2020 Census.

Please forward this email to friends and family to help spread the word! I hope you’ll do your part to ensure that Brooklyn is fairly and accurately represented in the 2020 Census.

Team – the 2020 Census is officially underway, and during this difficult time I want to take a moment to explain why it is important for you to participate.

NY-9 is one of the most diverse communities in the United States. And while that diversity only makes our community stronger, it makes us one of the hardest districts to count. In 2010, only 60.7% of NY-9 residents responded to the Census, while the national rate hit nearly 67%.

It is crucial that our diverse community is fully represented. The results of the Census will determine federal funding for education, healthcare, housing, and more for the next 10 years.

My goal as your Congresswoman is to provide you the info you need to understand your rights and ensure our community is accurately counted:

The Census will NOT ask for a Social Security number and there are no costs associated with completing the Census.

The Census will NOT ask about your citizenship status. I am proud that my amendment to prohibit the Census Bureau from sharing the data it collects with other Federal agencies (like I.C.E.) was adopted and passed last year. Additionally, your personal information is kept confidential and will not be shared with law enforcement.

Every resident should fill out the Census, no matter their citizenship status, immigration status, or country of origin. An accurate count that includes undocumented residents is critical to ensuring the services we all use, from hospitals to schools, have the resources they need to serve ALL Brooklyn residents.

You will be mailed an invitation to complete the 2020 Census. Once the invitation arrives, you should respond in one of three ways: online, by phone, or by mail. Each household only needs to complete one census form.

If you’ve already received your invitation, I strongly encourage you to take a moment to visit 2020Census.gov and take the Census on behalf of your household TODAY.

Thank you for playing your part in ensuring EVERYONE in our community gets counted.

Stay safe,

Yvette Clarke
