Message from National NOW President Christian F. Nunes

Greetings Feminists,

Ending racism is one of NOW’s six core issues. We are committed to identifying and combating the barriers to equality and justice imposed by structural racism, particularly those that inflict a double burden of race and sex discrimination on BIPOC women and girls, including trans women and girls.

Women of color often live at the intersection of harm caused by racism, sexism, and other forms of discrimination. Our commitment to intersectional feminism is a commitment to a thriving and free civil society, where gender and racial inequities no longer hold us back, and equal opportunities exist in all areas, including employment, education, and reproductive rights.

Women and non-gender conforming individuals are more likely to lack a livable wage, paid sick leave, face job discrimination, unequal pay, and lack financial literacy compared to their male counterparts. Among the BIPOC community, these disparities are wider and more harmful.

When we establish ourselves as activists for human and civil rights, we make a commitment to defend all individuals who experience these injustices. We cannot prioritize suffering and therefore we need to understand the intersections of race, gender, and systems of oppression.

We must dismantle the legal, political, and structural barriers to gender equality, and step up our fight for economic justice, reproductive freedom, freedom from gender-based violence, and respect for trans women and girls. NOW’s commitment to this cause is unwavering and strengthened by your involvement in our mission.

In solidarity,
Christian
