John,
It’s vital that we understand Black history and our moral debt to the civil rights movement. Without remembering history, it’s impossible for us to understand our obligation to the future.
When my father came to the United States in the late 1960s, he did so only because the 1965 Immigration Act opened the doors for him. It’s because Civil Rights activists like Representative Jim Clyburn, the late Representative John Lewis, and Representative Eleanor Holmes Norton put their lives on the line so that Asian and Indian immigrants like my father could make lives for themselves in America. And it’s because of them that I now have the opportunity to serve in Congress.

The Civil Rights Movement didn’t just create a better country for Black Americans. It opened doors for every person of color in America, those whose roots go back centuries and those newly arrived. It set us on the path to be a composite nation – a nation of nations – that Frederick Douglass once envisioned, where people from every background could come together to write the American story.
We’ve made phenomenal strides through centuries of struggle, yet there is still so much more we must do. I believe we will do it, thanks to people like you who continue to show up, volunteer, and work for a more just and equitable future. Thank you for all you do.
Onward,
Ro
