Legislative Update Dear Friends and Constituents, As we conclude week three of the legislative session, I am pleased to bring you the latest updates on the significant developments and decisions made during this time. First and foremost, I am excited to unveil the official name of our newsletter: Senator Salim's Senate Spotlight! Legislative Achievements: The Senate passed mt first bill, SB332, which addresses a small but crucial issue. This legislation changes the maximum charge for a class one misdemeanor from 365 to 364 days. This adjustment will protect legal residents who commit certain class one misdemeanors from facing deportation due to federal guidelines. Additionally, my bill SB316 has passed the Senate. This legislation enables the Town of Vienna to exert more control over preserving their tree canopy. The Final Vote on SB 332 Senators Applauding after the Passage of my First Bill from the Senate Floor Committee Victories: Several of my bills have progressed through their first committee hearing and have either made it to the floor, or been referred to other committees: SB21: Standardizing and maintaining paperwork for disabilities at Virginia higher education universities. SB273 (formerly SB55): Combining efforts with Sen. Suhas to establish mandatory waiting periods during gun purchases. This bill aims to make a meaningful impact on reducing suicide rates in our Commonwealth. SB306: Mandates stores to post signs identifying invasive plants, responding to the passionate advocacy of many constituents and other Virginians. SB338: Instructs JLARC to study the effects of gun violence on Virginia's communities. Other Legislation in Progress: SB2: The Assault Weapons Ban, introduced by Creigh Deeds and chief co-patroned by me, successfully passed out of the Courts of Justice committee! This was one of my top campaign promises and I am so happy to see it moving forward. Tysons Casino Bill (SB675): Last week, Sen. Marsden introduced a bill to add Tysons to the list of locations that can host a casino following a referendum. After careful consideration and hearing from numerous constituents, I have decided to oppose this bill. My full statement can be found here. This week, the General Laws Committee voted to pass the bill to the Senate Finance Committee. I appreciate the engagement of our community in providing feedback on the Tysons Casino Bill. Your voices have not gone unheard. Protecting our Progress: I am proud to report that proposals from the GOP to repeal policies on clean cars and gun safety were defeated in committee. Our commitment to maintaining responsible policies and protecting the progress made over the past few years remains steadfast. Meetings: At this point I have had over 100 meeting with various groups, constituents and elected officials. My calendar is getting very booked up, but if you are heading down to Richmond for session and would like to meet with me please send my office an email as soon as you can so we can get you on our calendar.
