Hey friend, have you ever heard of a zine?

A zine, short for magazine, is an accessible and expressive art form through which a creator can convey a message that is not easily communicated through words alone. Zines also oftentimes have an underlying political message.

The digital zines that our Ambassadors from the battleground regions of the Central Valley and Inland Empire worked hard to create express their demands for environmental justice for their communities.

The Ambassador program is in its third cohort and showing more and more success. California Environmental Voters Education Fund identifies, cultivates, and supports young leaders from California’s marginalized communities — the Ambassadors — to build power in these regions to effect change on key issues like clean air, clean water, and climate resiliency.

The Central Valley and Inland Empire have some of the nation’s worst air quality, especially from warehouses, which bring exhaust emissions and displace our communities of color. Long-term health risks like respiratory diseases, lung cancer, and impaired cognitive functioning severely impact these communities.

Living through that reality is an experience that cannot be understood with only statistics and facts. Millions of residents in these regions are forced to breathe in polluted air and drink unsafe water every single day, and our Ambassadors are here to speak up about it.

In an amazing recent update, two of the Ambassadors from last year’s cohort were interviewed in a piece by the Brennan Center for Justice — a policy institute based in New York and Washington, D.C. — on how young activists can aid in environmental decision-making!
