Today marks the anniversary of the 1972 Roe v. Wade decision, the landmark case that recognized the rights to privacy, self-determination, and access to abortion. On a day we should be celebrating, we are instead faced with a difficult reality: Almost two years ago, abortion rights were rejected by the Supreme Court.

Iowa's extremist governor and her MAGA friends in the legislature have already passed an abortion ban. That ban is currently stuck in the courts, but this is exactly why we need more Democrats in Iowa; to protect our rights.

This is about protecting our freedoms and our rights. Denying people the right to control what happens to their bodies is not liberty and it certainly is not freedom .

Doctors in states just like ours are fleeing because they are afraid of prosecution. Women are dying because they cannot access routine medical care. And people are afraid because that is what abortion bans are meant to do.

Iowans deserve more from their leaders than the fear and hardship that far-right extremists offer. We deserve our rights, freedoms, and hope.
