Sounding the Alarm: The 8th Circuit’s Discordant Note on Voting Rights ([link removed])

By Martin Luther King III

Here are some 2024 presidential updates.
* Vivek Ramaswamy and Asa Hutchingson dropped out of the presidential race, leaving only Donald Trump, Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis in the race for the GOP nomination. Where does each candidate stand on voting rights and democracy? Find out here. ([link removed])
* Trump won’t ([link removed]) be on Nevada's presidential primary ballot next month — but it's not why you might think. Instead of the state-run primary, Trump is participating in the GOP’s sanctioned caucus.
+ A 2021 law transitioned Nevada from a caucus system to a primary system. However, Nevada Republicans are currently challenging ([link removed]) the law in court and chose to hold a caucus in conjunction with the state’s legally required primary, causing voter confusion.

Here are some redistricting updates.
* Louisiana Republican lawmakers introduced new proposed congressional maps. Lawmakers were ordered to draw a second majority-Black district after the current map was struck down for violating the Voting Rights Act. The Legislature has until Jan. 30 to enact a new map.
+ Read more about Sen. Womack's proposal here ([link removed]) and Rep. Echol's proposal here ([link removed]) .
* The office of Secretary of State Michael Howe (R) stated that North Dakota will move forward with a court-imposed, fair legislative map for the 2024 election. Get background here. ([link removed])

Here are some other updates.
* A New York appellate court rejected ([link removed]) an attempt by the Republican National Committee and other GOP groups to block a new state law expanding mail-in voting. As of now, the law will remain in effect for the special election to fill George Santos' seat in February. Litigation will continue.
* The RNC and Georgia Republican Party are arguing ([link removed]) that a provision of the Voting Rights Act is unconstitutional, while seeking to defend Georgia's absentee ballot application deadline from a legal challenge.
* The Department of Justice filed ([link removed]) a brief urging the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to affirm a ruling requiring Pennsylvania to count valid mail-in ballots missing a handwritten date, or containing the incorrect date, on the outer envelope.
