Friend, We have made exciting progress on the Pregnant Students' Rights Act – legislation included in my Providing For Life Act – the comprehensive pro-family legislation I unveiled with Senator Marco Rubio last year. This vital pro-life legislation passed the House Education and Workforce Committee this week, and I’m hopeful it will continue to move forward. Navigating college can be difficult for pregnant students. In many cases, women are pressured to end their pregnancies or risk academic failure, despite protections. Women should never have to choose between continuing their education or carrying their babies to full term. Rather, they should feel empowered and supported in creating the best future possible for both themselves and their child. My bill ensures all college students who are pregnant or may become pregnant know their rights, including the availability of modified class schedules, excused absences, and childcare assistance. Women shouldn't have to choose between receiving their diplomas and becoming mothers. I'll continue working on legislation that supports new mothers and provides resources for families so that we can have as many healthy and happy moms and babies as possible. Best, Buchanan County Emergency Operations Center Construction for the Buchanan County Emergency Operations Center is underway! I am proud to have secured federal funding to bring this vital project across the finish line and ensure rural Iowans have access to safety services. Gilbertville Emergency Services Groundbreaking As a Member of the House Appropriations Committee, I’m committed to ensuring federal dollars are reinvested in Iowa and our rural communities. I was proud to secure funding for the Gilbertville Emergency Services Building and ensure first responders have the tools to keep the community safe. I enjoyed joining Members of the Gilbertville community for the groundbreaking this week! Condition of the State Thanks to Governor Kim Reynolds' conservative leadership, the condition of our state is strong. She has lowered taxes, empowered parents, protected the unborn, and supported seniors. Based on her Condition of State address this week, it is clear she will build on these successes for Iowa this year. I look forward to continued work alongside our governor to keep Iowa the best place to live, work, and raise a family. Meeting with Jonathan Williams President of USS Iowa Battleship and Museum I enjoyed meeting with Jonathan Williams, President of USS Iowa Battleship and Museum this week! Fun fact: USS Iowa represents the largest class of battleships built by the U.S. Navy and Iowa class battleships served in every US conflict from World War II through the 1991 Gulf War. Congressional App Challenge Winners I am thrilled to announce the winners of this year's Congressional App Challenge for IA-02: Varun Pradeep and Erich Nguyen from Linn-Mar High School! Their app, Magnify, will help fellow students easily navigate available electives at Linn-Mar High School and plan their preferred courses. I have a feeling that winning this app challenge is just the start for Varun and Erich, and I can't wait to see where they take their talents next! Watch the demonstration of their app here.
