Just since last week, COVID-19 has been declared a global pandemic by the WHO, and many school districts around the country have shut their doors in an attempt to stop the spread of this disease. These are uncharted waters for all of us in the education system: school nurses, teachers and administrators. As we work together to meet the needs of all of our students, please let us know what resources would be helpful to you. You can email us at [email protected]. In the meantime, we are providing resources and information on our website, and we have created a new section below in the Weekly Digest starting this week about COVID-19. BETTER LEARNING. ™ NASN News and Highlights Congratulations to Our Data4SchoolNurses Contest Winners We are pleased to announce the winners of NASN’s Data4SchoolNurses Contest. The purpose of the contest was to share creative ways to use school nursing data. We had an overall grand prize winner: Brandy Bowlen (TX), as well as a first-place winner in 3 categories: Video: Julietta Quinene (Guam); Infographic: Imo Jean Douglas (TX), and Powerpoint presentation: J. Renee Walker (MA). Watch for their winning entries and other ideas during the next few months. 2020 Voting Has Begun The 2020 NASN Elections are underway. You may vote now through April 15, 2020. Learn more about the candidates. VOTE NOW Collecting Data - Where Do I Start? Most school nurses are collecting data for a variety of reasons. If you have started, read this article from the January 2020 issue of NASN School Nurse to understand why collecting data is important and learn some simple steps to start collecting data at your school. Given the role of emotional health in children leading to academic success and the importance of attending to the whole child, this program has been developed to increase K-6 students’ abilities to cope with school stress in healthy and effective ways. COVID-19 can affect the respiratory tract, cause an asthma attack, and possibly lead to pneumonia and acute respiratory disease. READ THE ARTICLE Improving School Community and Student Health State Laws that Address How Schools Should Respond to Pandemics A new resource from school health experts at Child Trends and EMT Associates, Inc. provides the text of state laws that address how schools or school districts should respond to a disease outbreak. The tool can help stakeholders understand how schools in their state may respond to the COVID-19 outbreak. Some states have a comprehensive plan that address issues such as disease prevention, emergency procurement and staffing, flexible or remote instruction, or students’ access to services when schools are closed—for example, Oregon’s law establishing a “Pandemic-related Supplemental Nutrition Program” to provide food for students who otherwise would receive free meals at school.See a full list of states and their language that governs how schools should respond to a pandemic.
