From all of us at NRDC, Happy New Year and thank you
for your hard work and support over the last year. 2024 brings
new opportunities to build a cleaner, more equitable, and more
prosperous future — including curbing climate-busting pollution,
ensuring safe drinking water, protecting wildlife, and more. Stay
tuned for updates on how to get involved in these critical fights
— and get started right now by diving into our first issue of the
year below.

ACTION SPOTLIGHT

Help Make 2024 a Year of Climate Action
in Washington

2023 was the hottest year on record,
underscoring the urgency of shifting to clean energy and curbing
the carbon pollution that is driving the climate crisis.

We need urgent action to slash climate pollution and reduce our
dependence on dirty fossil fuels if we are to avert climate
catastrophe. We must work with the Biden administration and
Congress to continue the implementation of the historic Inflation
Reduction Act, ensure safe drinking water for all, accelerate our
transition to electric vehicles, and more.

Tell President Biden and Congress
that we’re counting on them to make climate a top priority this
year. ( [link removed] )

CAMPAIGN UPDATE

The EPA Just Moved to Cut Methane Leaks —
And Looks to Slash Soot and Carbon in 2024

The EPA released new rules last month to
cut methane leaks from the oil and gas sector, a necessary and
cost-effective way to curb the pollution causing climate change
and to protect public health — and a big step forward in our
long-running battle to reduce climate-warming pollution on every
front.

Now, we’re awaiting the EPA’s release of its final rule limiting
dangerous soot pollution, which we could see as early as this
month. And we’re expecting the agency’s final rule to slash
carbon pollution from power plants later this year. Both of these
rules will go a long way toward cleaning up our air, protecting
public health, and saving lives.

It’s shaping up to be a big year in our fight to kick
climate-busting pollution — and we’ll be keeping you updated on
ways to stay involved in this all-important battle.

power sector toward clean energy — and the start of new federal
and state policies that will help us get there — on NRDC.org. ( [link removed] )

STORYTELLER SPOTLIGHT

After 43 Years, My Parents Finally Have
Lead-Free Water:

Growing up in an industrial neighborhood
of Chicago, Gina Ramirez, NRDC’s multi-sector regional lead for
the Midwest, remembers her dad often warning: “Don’t drink the
water from the tap, I don’t want you to get sick.” This summer,
some relief finally came for her folks when the city replaced
their lead water pipes — but more families are still waiting, and
Ramirez is determined to keep fighting on their behalf. Read

ACTION ROUNDUP

* Tell the EPA to Finalize Strong
Standards for Safe Drinking Water: ( [link removed] ) Millions of Americans drink tap water served by lead pipes. The
EPA recently proposed standards to get lead out of drinking water
— and we need your help to make them a reality. Act now > ( [link removed] )

* Support Cover Cropping and Soil Health in the Farm Bill: ( [link removed] ) Anti-environment interests in Congress are subsidizing harmful
agricultural practices that threaten communities, wildlife, and
natural resources. Tell Congress to support a strong Farm Bill
that champions people and the environment. Act now > ( [link removed] )
