By Devon Hesano

Here are some updates.
* Former President Donald Trump is seeking ([link removed]) to hold Special Counsel Jack Smith in contempt for allegedly filing court documents while the Washington, D.C. election subversion case is paused.
* A federal court rejected ([link removed]) Georgia’s attempts to dismiss a claim by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) in a lawsuit challenging the state's voter suppression law, Senate Bill 202. The DOJ claims that S.B. 202 violates Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.
* Criminally indicted John Eastman and the Colorado Republican Party asked ([link removed]) a federal court to ban unaffiliated voters from the state's 2024 GOP primary. The state holds open primaries and 47% of Colorado voters are not registered with a party.
* A group of South Carolina voters filed ([link removed]) a lawsuit challenging a state law that permits voters to cast an absentee ballot without a qualifying excuse only if they are aged 65 and over. The plaintiffs claim that the law violates the 26th Amendment.
* Idaho officially repealed ([link removed]) student IDs as acceptable forms of voter ID as a new youth voter suppression law went into effect this week. There are two ongoing ([link removed]) lawsuits ([link removed]) challenging this statute.
* On Tuesday, Jan. 9, the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals willhold ([link removed]) oral argument on whether Trump is immune from prosecution for actions he took while serving as president in the federal election subversion case.

Here’s what to expect coming up.
* Tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. EST, there will be a remedial hearing in the lawsuit ([link removed]) over Michigan’s legislative maps. Last week, a three-judge panel struck down ([link removed]) the state’s legislative maps for being unconstitutional racial gerrymanders and ordered them to be redrawn.
