** Dear Friend,
------------------------------------------------------------

Khurshid struggled to adapt to her new home.

After fleeing the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in 2021, Khurshid arrived in the US without any knowledge of US culture while carrying the trauma of her experience from escaping her homeland.

“My first day of school was very difficult. I could not understand what the teachers were asking of me, as much as I wanted to learn,” says Khurshid.

But with the support of USCRI and people like you, Khurshid was able to learn English and start a new and promising life as a high school student in North Carolina.

“I am proud of myself and am now on the high school A-B Honor Roll, when less than two years ago I could not speak a word of English,” says Khurshid. “When I look back over two years, I feel I am much stronger and more confident of myself now than I was when I was in Afghanistan.”

Like all children and youth, Khurshid dreams of finishing her education, getting a fulfilling job, and making her sister proud. With your generous holiday gift today, you can help us continue to welcome, empower, and provide the specialized support that refugee girls and youth so urgently need. ([link removed])

After overcoming so much during her journey, Khurshid is now applying to community colleges to study accounting. “I am so excited for my future and feel empowered by my past,” she says.

Thank you for everything you do this holiday season to create a safer and welcoming future for those fleeing persecution and war. We are eternally grateful for your generosity. ([link removed])

With my thanks,
