Dear John xxxxxx,

Especially in this unparalleled moment in history, each of us is called on to do our part, to lead the way, to support one another, and to choose to respond to crisis with courage over fear, calm and compassion over panic.

I wanted to take a moment to update you on some of the actions we have decided to take.

We at The Opportunity Agenda have made the hard decision to postpone our May 6 annual gala celebration, and will be in touch soon with the new date, likely to be in the fall.

Our organization is committed to the health and well-being of one another, the communities we live and work in, and those who find themselves on the margins of our society. We are following guidelines set or suggested by scientific and medical professionals, and in the spirit of doing our part to protect the health and safety of our community we have decided to close our offices temporarily. Our staff will work from home during this period, and we will not stop working toward a more just society with equal opportunity for all. All business will be conducted remotely.

I am hard pressed to think of a time when the power of narrative was more important <[link removed]>. It is the difference between panic and sensible precaution; between a focus only on oneself and immediate loved ones in the service of “individual responsibility,” and an understanding that we flourish as community by confronting this challenge together and looking out for one another.

The story we want to tell about shared destiny, community, and mutual support can also strengthen our collective commitment to ensuring access to health care and services for all, regardless of economic status, identity, or background.

And narrative about the value and importance of truth telling and accurate information sharing is literally a matter of life and death at this time.

We know that so many of you are on the front lines of social justice and community service right now, and we are grateful for all you do. We hope that some of our tools <[link removed]> can be useful to you in your own messaging, and we urge and support you in your communication about how even viruses and medical testing must be viewed through the lenses of social, racial, and gender justice if we are to create the world we aspire to be.

Thank you for your support and partnership with The Opportunity Agenda. I cannot think of a more important time to be in community, together, and I so appreciate being shoulder to shoulder - even virtually - with you during this challenging time.

With wishes for health, safety, and peace.
