I write to you with a sense of urgency. And ask for your support in our work toward a compassionate approach to immigration. [[link removed]]
As you may know, the Darien Gap – situated between Colombia and Panama – is a dense jungle; a treacherous stretch of land that has become a perilous passage for migrants fleeing nearby countries in their quest for safety and prosperity.
This was not always the case. For most of recent history, the Darien was thought to be impassable. However, as the humanitarian crises grew – particularly in Venezuela – the dangers of the Darien were no match for the desperation many people faced if they stayed in their home countries.
Today, thousands of people cross through the Darien Gap every week, including very small children. It is an experience that no human should have to endure.
As we bear witness to this, it serves as a stark reminder that our current immigration policies are inadequate and demand comprehensive reform. The desperation and risks migrants face underscore the need for an approach that prioritizes human rights and addresses the underlying factors that drive people to embark on such perilous journeys.
