Dear John,
I write to you with a sense of urgency. And ask for your support in our work toward a compassionate approach to immigration.
As you may know, the Darien Gap – situated between Colombia and Panama – is a dense jungle; a treacherous stretch of land that has become a perilous passage for migrants fleeing nearby countries in their quest for safety and prosperity.
This was not always the case. For most of recent history, the Darien was thought to be impassable. However, as the humanitarian crises grew – particularly in Venezuela – the dangers of the Darien were no match for the desperation many people faced if they stayed in their home countries.
Today, thousands of people cross through the Darien Gap every week, including very small children. It is an experience that no human should have to endure.
As we bear witness to this, it serves as a stark reminder that our current immigration policies are inadequate and demand comprehensive reform. The desperation and risks migrants face underscore the need for an approach that prioritizes human rights and addresses the underlying factors that drive people to embark on such perilous journeys.
That’s why, as we near the end of another year advocating for human rights across Latin America, I hope you’ll continue to invest in WOLA’s work with a generous year-end donation.
A gift of $50, $100, or even $250 helps strengthen the foundation from which we work. It strengthens our ability to work towards policy change. It strengthens our ability to travel throughout Latin America, working with local organizations and stakeholders to create meaningful changes to a system that is not supporting those who need it most.
Thank you for all that you helped WOLA accomplish this year. We could not have done it without you. |
