In the heart of southeast Louisiana, where indigenous communities face the brunt of environmental injustice, 2023 TOA Culture & Narrative Fellow Monique Verdin is empowering her community, one radio wave at a time.

A transdisciplinary artist and storyteller and citizen of the Houma Nation, Monique works on documenting the complex relationship between environment, culture, and climate through different initiatives and projects that include her work as a steward of The Land Memory Bank & Seed Exchange, and “Bvlbancha Liberation Radio.”

Bvlbancha Liberation Radio is an indigenous led, micro-grid communication and collective power building station based in Bvlbancha (New Orleans). The radio station provides indigenous news, views, music, and community channels for environmental concerns in the greater Gulf South. More importantly, it provides a safe space for Indigenous Peoples and allies to discuss pressing land and water issues, as well as adaptation practices and policies that drive the struggle for climate justice in a region that has the worst air quality in the nation.
“I encounter a lot of people who do not realize that there are still indigenous people in the Southeast, mostly because we have stayed underground, hidden, and quiet. This amplification of our radio has been a real blessing.”
In 2023, Monique was selected as a Culture & Narrative Fellow as a part of the Narrative Innovators Lab. TOA’s fellowship provided Monique and her Bvlbancha Liberation Radio project collaborators with critical funding to support programming and connected her with other artists and leaders in the field.
