Message from National NOW President Christian F. Nunes
Greetings Feminists,
A statistic that never fails to fill me with disappointment is the fact that only half [ [link removed] ] of U.S. states require sex education. Out of those, only 13 states require sex education to be medically accurate. This is a miscarriage of justice for our students, and NOW advocates for reproductive health education for all.
Reproductive health education is critical to setting up young people for success. It encompasses educating the youth on anatomy, pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV/AIDS, and healthy models of dating and relationships as a way to combat domestic violence. Research shows that when sex education is all-inclusive, young people feel better suited to make informed decisions with better outcomes — such as fewer unplanned pregnancies and better protection against STIs.
For our young people to feel fully empowered, they require full access to information that will allow them to make the right choices for their lives. After all, full bodily autonomy doesn’t just mean having the right to make decisions but also having the knowledge to make those decisions purposeful. We have a long way to go before we reach a level of widespread comprehensive sex education, but let’s ensure we are making the necessary steps forward.
In solidarity,
Christian

NOW in the News
• It is no surprise that we have a childcare crisis in this country. The U.S. is one of only 6 countries that doesn’t provide medical paid leave and is the only World Health Organization country with maternal deaths rising, rather than falling. The good news? A brighter future for families is possible! In this week’s episode of Feminism NOW, Christian F. Nunes speaks with Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, Executive Director, CEO, and Co-Founder of MomsRising, a grassroots organization of more than a million people working to achieve economic security for families, moms, and women in the United States. Kristin shares how policy changes can transform the state of childcare so everyone can be supported in their decision to raise children, and how investing in families means investing in our national economy. Whether you have a mom, know a mom, employ a mom, or are a mom, this issue impacts everyone. Tune in to this impassioned discussion for advice about how to get involved and to learn more about the inspiring changes advancing care, health, and equity for us all.
