Dear John, remember when I testified in front of the Federal Election Commission back in March?
Well today, the FEC just changed the rules — and we helped make it easier for working people to run Congress!
BEFORE → Congressional candidates were required to wait until they made the ballot to take a salary from their campaign funds. (Most campaigns run for a full year before making the ballot. Especially for moms, losing a year's income is not an option).
NOW → Congressional candidates can take a salary the day they file their statement of candidacy and when they’ve raised enough to be able to pay themselves a salary.
BEFORE→ Congressional candidates could only earn LESS than they earned the previous year (which hurt anyone who was a caretaker or student, had been on medical leave, or already received a low income).
BEFORE → Now, you can take the average of your salary over the last 5 years that you were working anytime before your campaign launched.
The expanded flexibility and eligibility with the new rules will make it possible for working folks to pay themselves a living wage -- so that they don't go break running for Congress -- opening the doors for more candidates of modest means to run.
This is truly a game-changer, John, and I have no words to express how excited I am!
Together, we are breaking down the barriers that block trailblazing mamas running of office and creating a more equitable political system. We can't do this important work without you though, John.
