John, remember when I testified in front of the Federal Election Commission back in March?
Well today, the FEC just changed the rules — and we helped make it easier for working people to run for federal office!
- BEFORE → Federal candidates were required to wait until they made the ballot to take a salary from their campaign funds. (Most campaigns run for a full year before making the ballot. Especially for moms, losing a year's income is not an option).
- NOW → Federal candidates can take a salary the day they file their statement of candidacy and when they’ve raised enough to be able to pay themselves a salary.
- BEFORE→ Federal candidates could only take home LESS money than they earned the previous year (which hurt anyone who didn't earn an income that year, such as full-time caregivers or students).
- NOW → Federal candidates can take the average salary over the last 5 years that they worked, regardless of how long it was prior to becoming a candidate.
The expanded flexibility and eligibility with these new rules make it possible for working folks to pay themselves a living wage so that they don't go broke running for federal office. This is truly a game-changer, and I have no words to express how excited I am!
Together, we are breaking down the barriers that block trailblazing mamas running for office and creating a more equitable political system. We can't do this important work without you though, John.
