This week at CBPP, we focused on the economy, the federal budget, state budgets and taxes, federal taxes, health, and food assistance.
* On the economy, Chye-Ching Huang pointed out that there are far better ways than a payroll tax cut to contain COVID-19’s economic damage ([link removed]) . Jennifer Sullivan explained that a Medicaid funding boost for states to address COVID-19 can’t wait ([link removed]) . We updated our backgrounder on how many weeks of unemployment compensation are available ([link removed]) .
* On the federal budget, Richard Kogan, Kathleen Romig, and Jennifer Beltrán reported that President Trump’s 2021 budget would cut $1.6 trillion from low-income programs ([link removed]) . Kogan, David Reich, and Beltrán updated their report pointing out that non-defense programs face tight funding in 2021 ([link removed]) . We also updated our backgrounder on the federal budget process ([link removed]) .
* On state budgets and taxes, Samantha Waxman suggested states should support struggling families ([link removed]) through Earned Income Tax Credits (EITCs). Erica Williams, Waxman, and Juliette Legendre explained how states can adopt or expand EITCs ([link removed]) to build a stronger future economy. Williams, Waxman, and Legendre also reported on how much a state EITC would cost in fiscal year 2021 ([link removed]) and described how state EITCs and minimum wages work best together ([link removed]) . We also updated our backgrounder on state EITCs

* On federal taxes, Samantha Jacoby highlighted findings from the Government Accountability Office that the 2017 tax law created new compliance challenges for the IRS. ([link removed])
* On health, we updated our policy briefs on why taking away Medicaid for not meeting work requirements harms children ([link removed]) , people with disabilities ([link removed]) , people with substance use disorders ([link removed]) , veterans ([link removed]) , rural residents and communities ([link removed]) , women ([link removed]) , American Indians and Alaska Natives
([link removed]) , people experiencing homelessness ([link removed]) , low-wage workers ([link removed]) , people with mental health conditions ([link removed]) , and older Americans ([link removed]) .
* On food assistance, we updated our issue brief on the dangers of taking away SNAP benefits ([link removed]) from parents who do not cooperate with the Child Support program.
