This week at CBPP, we focused on the economy, the federal budget, state budgets and taxes, federal taxes, health, and food assistance.

On the economy, Chye-Ching Huang pointed out that there are far better ways than a payroll tax cut to contain COVID-19’s economic damage. Jennifer Sullivan explained that a Medicaid funding boost for states to address COVID-19 can’t wait. We updated our backgrounder on how many weeks of unemployment compensation are available.

On the federal budget, Richard Kogan, Kathleen Romig, and Jennifer Beltrán reported that President Trump’s 2021 budget would cut $1.6 trillion from low-income programs. Kogan, David Reich, and Beltrán updated their report pointing out that non-defense programs face tight funding in 2021. We also updated our backgrounder on the federal budget process.

On state budgets and taxes, Samantha Waxman suggested states should support struggling families through Earned Income Tax Credits (EITCs). Erica Williams, Waxman, and Juliette Legendre explained how states can adopt or expand EITCs to build a stronger future economy. Williams, Waxman, and Legendre also reported on how much a state EITC would cost in fiscal year 2021 and described how state EITCs and minimum wages work best together. We also updated our backgrounder on state EITCs.

On federal taxes, Samantha Jacoby highlighted findings from the Government Accountability Office that the 2017 tax law created new compliance challenges for the IRS.

On health, we updated our policy briefs on why taking away Medicaid for not meeting work requirements harms children, people with disabilities, people with substance use disorders, veterans, rural residents and communities, women, American Indians and Alaska Natives, people experiencing homelessness, low-wage workers, people with mental health conditions, and older Americans.

On food assistance, we updated our issue brief on the dangers of taking away SNAP benefits from parents who do not cooperate with the Child Support program.
