Here is a major update from New York.
* New York's highest court ordered ([link removed]) new congressional districts to be drawn for the 2024 elections. This key ruling could flip as many as six seats to Democrats, potentially impacting control of the U.S. House of Representatives in 2024.
+ The state’s independent redistricting commission must propose a new congressional map to the Legislature by the end of February.
Here are some other updates.
* The U.S. Supreme Court left ([link removed]) an illegal commissioners map in effect in Galveston County, Texas. The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals originally ruled that the map violates the Voting Rights Act, but is now reviewing the case again. The Court’s liberal leaning judges dissented from the ruling.
* Civil rights groups asked ([link removed]) the full U.S. 8th Circuit Court of Appeals to reconsider a catastrophic decision by a three-judge panel that weakened enforcement of the Voting Rights Act. The panel ruled ([link removed]) voters cannot sue to enforce the law's most utilized provision, Section 2.
* Voters objected to Georgia's new Republican gerrymandered congressional ([link removed]) and legislative ([link removed]) maps, arguing they clearly violate the court's order to draw districts that comply with the Voting Rights Act. A hearing will be held on the districts on Dec. 20.
