Dear John,

Often, discussions on the concept of religious freedom focus on creating interfaith dialogue. However, a full understanding of religious freedom and its importance to democracy encompasses the very real social and political impacts of religious majoritarianism, a view that dismisses minority protection and elevates the beliefs of only the majority.

In order to push back against threats to religious freedom, it is crucial for community-based civil society organizations to advocate for more inclusive societies in which all—majority and minority group members—have equal rights.

NEW REPORT: Exiled Journalism and Transnational Repression

Authoritarian regimes are increasingly reaching beyond their borders to attack, intimidate, and detain journalists in an effort to control information and stamp out dissent.

Freedom House's newest report, A Light That Cannot Be Extinguished: Exiled Journalism and Transnational Repression, finds that between 2014 and 2023 at least 112 acts of transnational repression were committed against journalists by 26 governments.
