Dear John,
COP28 – the 28th UN Climate Change Conference – has started today in Dubai.
The two-week conference brings together world leaders, politicians and experts from 198 different parties to discuss the climate crisis on a global level.
This year, it will also include the first Global Stocktake, where states will assess the progress that has been made towards the Paris Agreement – a legally binding international treaty – to limit global average temperatures.
The climate crisis and human displacement are becoming increasingly interconnected.
Climate-related disasters triggered more than half of new displacements in 2022.
Nearly 60% of all refugees and internally displaced people are living in countries that are most vulnerable to climate change
Climate change is a ‘threat multiplier’, which magnifies many issues that lead to displacement, including lack of resources, loss of livelihoods and poverty.
