Dear John,
The next book in the Realities of Socialism series – a project of the Fraser Institute working in partnership with think tanks in the U.S., Australia, and the U.K. – looks at Estonia.
After the Soviet Union invaded Estonia and imposed socialism, living standards in Estonia plummeted.
Before socialism, from 1925 - 1934, workers in Estonia earned 84% MORE than workers in neighbouring Finland.
After decades of socialism, by 1988 Estonians earned only 22% of what Finns earned.
Compared to Finns, Estonians had to work much longer for basic goods, such as clothing, a refrigerator or even a television, assuming they were even available.
That’s not all, the average Estonian could expect to live 5 years less than people in high-income countries.
This new book will be released next month. But you can look at Estonia’s history with socialism right now, by checking out the new videos and infographics at RealitiesOfSocialism.org [[link removed]].
Sincerely,
Niels Veldhuis
