The next book in the Realities of Socialism series – a project of the Fraser Institute working in partnership with think tanks in the U.S., Australia, and the U.K. – looks at Estonia.
After the Soviet Union invaded Estonia and imposed socialism, living standards in Estonia plummeted.
Before socialism, from 1925 - 1934, workers in Estonia earned 84% MORE than workers in neighbouring Finland.
After decades of socialism, by 1988 Estonians earned only 22% of what Finns earned.
Compared to Finns, Estonians had to work much longer for basic goods, such as clothing, a refrigerator or even a television, assuming they were even available.
That’s not all, the average Estonian could expect to live 5 years less than people in high-income countries.
