Advances in artificial intelligence are increasing the scale, speed, and efficiency of digital repression. Authoritarian governments are engaging in transnational repression, reaching across borders into democratic countries to silence dissent among diaspora and exiles through assassinations, illegal deportations, abductions, digital threats, Interpol abuse, and family intimidation. Attacks on free expression are one of the biggest drivers of democratic decline over the last 17 years, as determined in our 50th edition of Freedom in the World this year, and they are only growing more common around the world.
