John,
It’s been a rough week. People are panicked by the coronavirus, and the market has plummeted. Many cities here and around the world will likely feel the negative economic impacts for years to come.
In the face of this global pandemic, Rep. Nadler reportedly proposed Congress members ‘going home’ from D.C. to stay safe. Speaker Pelosi quickly shut that idea down stating, “We are the captains of the ship. We are the last to leave.”
Rep. Nadler’s idea to shutter the Capitol is disappointing at a time when we need leadership the most.
As an international hub, there is increased pressure on New York City to figure out how to keep people safe, business open, and the world moving. Today, we released a statement responding to Rep. Nadler’s proposal to ‘Go Home’ during this public health crisis:
"Rep. Nadler's impulse to run away from a global pandemic that is disproportionately impacting the city he represents shows his lack of leadership in a time of crisis. We have people who cannot afford to stay home if exposed or get treated if infected. If New York City schools shut down, many children will not eat — including the 114,000 homeless students.
"Rep. Nadler's proposal to leave when we need him most is appalling. He should be fighting to get New York the funds we need to contain this public health emergency," continued Ms. Boylan. "As an international hub, New York City is on the frontlines of this outbreak. The city and state have been working tirelessly day and night as a matter of national security. We expect Rep. Nadler to stay in Washington and do the same."
