From the Amazon to global decision-making spaces, Indigenous women are leaders in protecting ancestral territories in the rainforest, and all of the life they support. One of the major threats they face is mining, which brings ecological devastation and rights abuses to Indigenous communities, and has caused more than 10 percent of the Amazon biome’s loss.

Indigenous women are on the front lines resisting mining and building a pan-Amazon movement to protect their territories for good. They face intense threats and violence for their advocacy, making global solidarity that much more important. Alessandra Korap Munduruku was a leader in her community’s successful resistance to British mining company Anglo American, which led to them withdrawing 27 mining permits overlapping Indigenous territories. Amazon Watch accompanied the Munduruku’s resistance and works closely with Alessandra and her community of Sawré Muybu to secure permanent rights to their territory.
