This month, we celebrate Women’s History Month, dedicated to the women who pioneered the movement for gender equality and all of our female leaders that continue to pave the way for future generations.

Women’s history runs strong throughout NY-9. This is the seat once held by Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman elected to the United States Congress. Yvette herself was inspired to run for public office by her mother, former New York City Council Member Dr. Una S. T. Clarke. In fact, they were the first mother-daughter succession in New York City Council history.

Women’s equality is an issue near and dear to Yvette’s heart. She founded and co-chairs the Congressional Task Force on Black Women and Girls, which specifically focuses on economic opportunities, safety, healthcare, and criminal justice issues that disproportionately impact black women.

In Congress, Yvette has been steadfast in her support of women's reproductive rights, and a vocal opponent of anti-choice legislation that would restrict abortion rights.

She has also been a strong proponent of paid family leave so that working women don’t have to choose between caring for a sick child or keeping food on the table.

And she advocates for women’s economic equality – Pay equity is a moral imperative and critical in boosting women’s financial security. Yvette is a co-sponsor of the Paycheck Fairness Act, which will close loopholes in the Equal Pay Act and passed the House last year.

All this to say, Yvette has been on the front lines fighting to protect and expand women’s rights — and it is because of her years of advocacy that she has been endorsed by organizations including Planned Parenthood Action Fund and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s Off the Sidelines. Here’s what they’re saying about Yvette:

Yvette is honored to have the support of these incredible organizations in 2020 and we can’t wait to get to work alongside them to advocate for women’s rights.

Thanks for your support,

-- Team Clarke
