New Climate Action Report Card Finds the World Is Off Track on All Metrics but One

WRI’s new State of Climate Action 2023 report analyzes current progress towards limiting warming to 1.5 degrees C (2.7 degrees F), the target scientists say is necessary for keeping some of the worst climate impacts at bay. Of 42 indicators of progress assessed in the report, only one — the sale of electric cars — is on track. WRI experts lay out what’s needed between now and 2030 and 2050 to keep the 1.5-degree C goal within reach. Read more

Explainer: What You Need to Know About Carbon Capture, Utilization and Sequestration (CCUS)

[link removed]

Carbon capture, utilization and sequestration, or CCUS, is the process of capturing carbon dioxide at its source — such as from a power plant — before it enters the atmosphere. CCUS has recently gained global attention and investment, including through the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act

and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, but its use is both controversial and nascent. CCUS technologies still capture only 0.1% of global emissions, and many view it as a distraction from the real priority of ending fossil fuel use. WRI experts answer key questions about the role of CCUS in meeting long-term climate goals. Read more

Adopting the “Global Goal on Adaptation” Is a Top Priority at COP28, but Negotiators Must Overcome Key Hurdles

[link removed]

Half of the world’s population — 3.6 billion people — are already highly vulnerable to floods, droughts and other impacts of climate change. As global temperatures rise, so will this figure. The Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA), established under the 2015 international Paris Agreement on climate change, aims to build all communities’ resilience to escalating climate threats, but little progress has been made on its implementation. That could change at the UN climate summit (COP28) at the end of this month. Read more

Carbon capture, sequestration and utilization (CCUS) is not the same as carbon removal. CCUS is a process that extracts carbon from other gases at the source, before it enters the atmosphere, and then stores or incorporates it into another product. Carbon removal, on the other hand, removes CO2 already in the atmosphere through both natural and technological processes.
