Carbon capture, utilization and sequestration, or CCUS, is the process of capturing carbon dioxide at its source — such as from a power plant — before it enters the atmosphere. CCUS has recently gained global attention and investment, including through the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, but its use is both controversial and nascent. CCUS technologies still capture only 0.1% of global emissions, and many view it as a distraction from the real priority of ending fossil fuel use. Half of the world’s population — 3.6 billion people — are already highly vulnerable to floods, droughts and other impacts of climate change. As global temperatures rise, so will this figure. The Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA), established under the 2015 international Paris Agreement on climate change, aims to build all communities’ resilience to escalating climate threats, but little progress has been made on its implementation.
