It’s an exciting time for gun safety: after Congress passed the historic Bipartisan Safer Communities Act and strengthened gun background checks after the Uvalde massacre, now we have the chance to enact a new federal rule to move us closer to truly universal background checks. The Department of Justice has proposed a new rule that would require more firearm dealers who have historically sold weapons in off-book sales to do background checks on all gun sales. This new rule would close the deadly gap in regulation and would prevent more guns from getting into the hands of potentially dangerous people who are already prohibited from possessing guns. [1] It could save countless lives in Pennsylvania and across the country.

The proposed rule is now open for public comments, which will be considered when deciding to formally enact the rule. Here’s where we need your help.

In Pennsylvania, you do not need a background check to buy a long gun such as rifles, shotguns, or military-style assault weapons from private sellers. [2] This is a deadly gap in regulation, allowing potentially dangerous individuals to access weapons of war.
